Liam and Kaela, known together on the court as Sizzle, brought the heat at our last major event, taking first place in the Mixed Doubles division. We had the chance to ask them some questions about their strategies, memorable moments, and what they have planned for the future.

The Interview

How did each of you get into pickleball, and what first got you hooked on competing?

Kaela and I started playing with our $10 paddles in the summer of 2024, and it quickly became something we both looked forward to. Once we found people to play against, we were hooked and loved improving and competing together.

— Liam Greening

Do either of you come from other sports backgrounds, and how has that shaped your pickleball game?

Yeah, we both grew up playing other sports. The joy of competing kind of disappears after high school, so finding a new sport to learn and challenge ourselves with has been a lot of fun.

— Liam Greening

How did you two decide to team up for the Obsidian Open, and what do you think makes a great doubles partnership work?

We thought it would be fun to play together, and we know each other’s game pretty well. It just made sense to give it a shot as a team.

— Liam Greening

What was your mindset going into the tournament, and was there a moment that stood out most?

We wanted to play hard, stay positive, and enjoy it no matter what happened. We were lucky to find our rhythm early and had an absolute blast competing.

— Liam Greening

What’s your favorite thing about playing mixed doubles together?

It’s honestly just fun — well, when we’re playing well and winning, lol.

— Liam Greening

What does teamwork look like to you both on and off the court?

On the court, it’s all about communication and trusting each other’s shots. Off the court, it’s supporting one another and remembering that, at the end of the day, it’s just a game — our relationship always comes first.

— Liam Greening

What does tournament preparation look like for your team, on tournament day and the days leading up to it?

We usually get a few games in before the event, focus on consistency, and make sure we’re rested. We don’t overcomplicate it — we just want to go in feeling ready and connected.

— Liam Greening

What drives you to take things beyond casual play and step into competition? In other words, what do you get out of it that you don’t find in recreational play?

Competing pushes us to grow. It’s fun to test ourselves, and you learn a lot more about your game (and your mindset) when there’s something on the line.

— Liam Greening

Any athletic or personal goals you’re currently chasing for 2025 or in 2026 (specific tournaments, rankings, or personal milestones)?

We’d love to keep improving and place in a few more tournaments. Mostly, we just want to stay active, keep having fun, and keep getting better together.

— Liam Greening

Who’s more competitive between the two of you?

It depends on the day! I might show it more, but Kaela’s quietly just as competitive — maybe even more.

— Liam Greening

What does the community side of pickleball mean to you personally?

The people we’ve met through pickleball are incredible — supportive, friendly, and always willing to help you get better, even when you’re just starting out. It’s such a welcoming group.

— Liam Greening

What advice would you give someone signing up for their first Paragon Circuit event?

Don’t overthink it — just sign up and have fun. Everyone’s there to learn and enjoy the day. The more relaxed you are, the better you’ll play.

— Liam Greening

How do you see pickleball growing or evolving in the next few years, especially for competitive players like yourselves?

It’s amazing how fast it’s growing. You see new courts, new players, and more organized events every month. I think it’s only going to get more competitive and even more connected as the community keeps expanding.
